The material for these pencil cases is made by heat pressing old plastic shopping bags into large plastic sheets, and backing them with newspaper to create a suede-like texture. In the heating process, print on the newspaper transfers to the plastic adding a graphic element to the final product and the newspaper fibers fuse with the plastic to create a suede-like texture. The material is then cut and machine sewn into small and large pencil cases.
Plastic bags and newspaper are fused together to produce a durable recycled material that can be used to make almost any soft good. These pencil cases are just one quick iteration of what is possible with the material that comes from the process I developed.
